Level A: Mission Statement
Level B: Broad Goals of the Department contains your
broad philosophical goals, written in ideal form (e.g., produce the best
graduates, satisfy the constituent groups and stakeholders, maintain ABET
accreditation). They are like the mission statement for the department and
probably could be called such.
Level C: Program Educational Objectives are usually
written as a bullet list of items that characterize the qualities of your
graduates. ABET says that they “describe the expected accomplishments of
graduates during the first few years after graduation.” Also at this level arre
objectives that relate to the program, itself, such as facilities, faculty, and
curriculum.
Level D: Program Outcomes "describe what students are
expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation.” These are
general statements like ABET/TAC’s Criterion 1 a-k. The IUPUI PULs are also at
this level in the hierarchy.
Level E: Measurable Learning Outcomes are statements
that describe what you plan to assess across students and are mapped onto the
items at Level D. These are more detailed than the ABET a-k, but more general
than general course outcomes.
Level F: Course Outcomes contains your broad course
outcomes, i.e., those statements in your course syllabus that tell students and
external constituencies what the course will cover. It does not go into detail.
Level G: Course Instructional Objectives tell students
what they must be able to demonstrate when you evaluate them for a course
grade.
