Guitar Ensemble

The IUPUI guitar ensemble brings together guitarists of various abilities and backgrounds to develop the skills of ensemble playing. Repertoire includes classical, world, jazz, blues, and other styles of music.  For more information and authorization, contact John Alvarado at

The goal of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to build their guitar skills through ensemble playing. Students will develop a better understanding of rhythm, improve their sight reading, and grow from the challenge of performing as a member of a group.

1.a. Technical skills requisite for artistic self-expression in at least one major performance area at a level appropriate for the particular music concentration.

1.b. An overview understanding of the repertory in their major performance area and the ability to perform from a cross-section of that repertory.

1.c. The ability to read at sigh with fluency demonstrating both general musicianship and, in the major performance area, a level of skill relevant to professional standards appropriate for the particular music concentration.

Required Materials
  • A six-string acoustic guitar
  • One three-ring binder or folder for keeping ensemble music
  • Must bring a pencil to EVERY rehearsal
  • Guitar Tuner (can download as an app for smartphones)
  • Metronome (can download as an app for smartphones)
  • Concert Attire:
    • Men: Black Dress Shirt, Black Dress Pants
    • Women: Black Dress Slacks and Blouse or Black Dress/Skirt.
