Compressible Flow and Renewable Kinetic Energy Design

EEN 44500 / 3 Cr.

This course is designed to introduce compressible flow, turbomachines and design of kinetic energy conversion and storage devices for wind, wave and tidal renewable energy sources. Students will first learn about compressible flow, turbomachines concepts and kinetic energy sources available on earth. Next, the course will provide students with analysis, design parameters and control renewable kinetic energies.
Textbooks

Class notes. Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics, Munson, Young, Okiishi, Huebsch, Wiley, ©2012. & Power Conversion and Control of Wind Energy, Wu, Lang, Zargari, & Kouro, Wiley, ©2011.

Goals

The goal is to introduce compressible flow, turbomachines and design of kinetic energy conversion and storage devices for wind, wave and tidal renewable energy sources.

Outcomes

After completion of the course the students should be able to:

  • Understand theoretical concepts of compressible flow, boundary layers and turbomachines.
  • Understand design factors and parameters effecting efficiency of turbomachines.
  • Discuss theoretical considerations of renewable kinetic energy sources that include wind, wave and tidal.
  • Understand the basic principles of the energy conversion device for renewable energy sources that mainly cover wind, wave and tidal.
  • Identify the basic design components and their functions for the selected kinetic energy conversion device.
  • Use energy conversion principles and basic design components to understand the current energy conversion devices and evaluate their conversion efficiency.
  • Use energy storage principles to perform basic system design and component selection for the selected energy storage device.
  • Discuss practical considerations for kinetic energy conversion control and their respective current challenges and future directions.
