Capstone Design

ME 46200 / 3 Cr. (3 Class)

Concurrent engineering design concept is introduced and practiced.  Application of the design is emphasized.  Design problems from all areas of mechanical engineering are considered.

Goals

To teach the process of design to generate better quality designs in less time, the organization within a company, how to be more creative in solving design problems, and how to design as part of a group activity.

Outcomes

After completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  3. Establish a project schedule and work plan, and aware of project management techniques. [c, g, d] [PUL 1A, 2, 3]
  4. Develop design specifications by completion of a house of quality. [c, f] [PUL 2, 3, 4]
  5. Generate design ideas based on functional decomposition. [c] [PUL 2,3]
  6. Evaluate the ideas based on customer requirements. [e, k] [PUL 1B, 2, 3]
  7. Creatively generate product designs. [a, c] [PUL 1B, 2, 3]
  8. Complete the design including considerations for cost, safety, environmental, and societal impacts. [h, j] [PUL 3, 2]

  10. Utilize computer-aided design tools for engineering design, analysis and manufacturing. [k] [PUL 3]
  11. Develop a physical prototype of the final design using appropriate manufacturing tools [k] [PUL 3]
