Control System Analysis and Design

ME 48200 / 3 Cr. (3 Class)

Classical feedback concepts, root locus, Bode and Nyquist techniques, state-space formulation, stability, design applications. Students may not receive credit for both 48200 and ECE 38200.

To teach students more advanced concepts of linear system theory than in the two preceding courses. System modeling, identification, feedback, control and stability will be emphasized. This course is the third course in a sequence of courses on linear dynamic systems ME 330, ME 340, and ME 482).


After completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  1. Explain the concept of feedback control [a]
  2. Explain the concepts of stability and accuracy for control [a]
  3. Relate the zeros and poles of a system to its time response [a]
  4. Plot root-locus and Bode plots manually and by using Matlab [a, k]
  5. Design lead, lag and lead-lag compensators for a given system to meet the given design specifications [c, a]
  6. Design a control system by using both Bode plots and by root-locus using Matlab and prepare a written report [c, g]
