Computer Engineering Technology

Advances in computer engineering technology have revolutionized the world in applying electronics to a vast array of activities from large manufacturing systems to e-commerce to small hand-held devices to measurements and testing. Computer systems in all forms, including PCs and embedded microprocessors, have changed the way people live and work. Almost daily, new computer systems are introduced that have more powerful processors, better memory systems, and new software. These computer systems are the heart of applications such as industrial controllers, robotics, auto electronics, instrumentation, network applications, medical equipment, and handheld electronic devices, to name a few.

The purpose of the new Computer Engineering Technology program is to train engineering technicians and technologists to design, develop and implement modern computer-based applications. The CpET program is offered by a partnership arrangement between the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology and Computer and Information Technology. The technical portion of the program is a combination of revised ECET courses, CIT courses, and new CpET courses. A major emphasis of the CpET program is practice-oriented, hands-on training in laboratories for each CpET course to provide students and graduates with a rich experience in computer applications.

Graduates of the new Computer Engineering Technology program will be trained for exciting careers in software design and hardware development for computer systems. Graduates of the CpET program might work in high-tech areas such as automation, telecommunications, embedded microprocessor systems, and product development. The graduates for these jobs are in very high demand. The average starting salary for B.S. degrees in CpET are expected to range from $50,000 to $70,000.

The program began Fall 2001.

Application Procedures

Applicants should be graduates of an accredited high school with the following prepatory courses:

  • 8 semesters of English composition or literature
  • 4 semesters of mathematics including first and second year algebra and geometry
  • 2 semesters of laboratory science (physics, chemistry)
  • 4 semesters of social science

In addition, applicants should have completed the SAT or the ACT college entry examinations scoring at or above the average for the State of Indiana, and rank in the upper half of their high school graduation class.

Transfer students are welcome. Transfer credit is utilized wherever it is applicable. A counselor will work with the student in making this assignment.
