To get started with AutoCAD, log into your student Engineering account using the CNC Login
on the main screen. Then go to the Start button, Programs, AutoCAD 14. You will see the screen
shown as Figure 1 below.

This shows all the menus, and common drawing icons. Over the next few pages, we will explore these
menus and some of the icons. The following material is not a tutorial in any sense. It is a handy reference
to how AutoCAD 14 is configured. Looking over some of the icons and their meanings will shorten the
time needed to become familiar with the software. The 2 vertical columns of icons on the left are explained
in Figure 12.

 

Figure 2 below shows the File pull-down menu. Just as in Word, this allows opening new and old
drawings, saving them, printing them, etc.

Figure 3 below shows the Edit menu; again it is similar to the Word menu.

Figure 4 below is now quite different in AutoCAD, than it is in Word.

  1. _new drawing, or an invitation to name & save the existing drawing.
  2. _open an existing drawing file
  3. _qsave
  4. _print
  5. _preview i.e. print preview
  6. _spell same as in Word, i.e. spellcheck
  7. ‘_cutclip like Control X, i.e. cut to clipboard
  8. ‘_copyclip like Control C, i.e. copy
  9. ‘_pasteclip like Control V, i.e. paste
  10. On these last 3 commands the apostrophe ’ means these are transparent commands.

  11. _matchprop
  12. _u undo, same as in Word
  13. _redo must immediately follow the _u or _undo command
  14. _tracking unknown command ????
  15. _ucs
  16. can be one of 5 icons here: a)_ dist distance between 2 points, b)_area, i.e. calculates area & perimeter, c)_massprop, d) _list database information, e) _id gives coordinates of a location
  17. _redrawall
  18. _dsviewer aerial view
  19. ‘_pan
  20. ‘_zoom zoom realtime
  21. ‘_zoom window; a series of sub-menu icons appears
  22. ‘_zoom previous view

This site appears if one uses the command _browser, or goes to the Help pull-down menu
