Computing Resources
The computing resources available for the mechanical engineering students and faculty include:
- University Information Technology Services (UITS) which provides services to all students and faculty within the Indiana University system. Among many modern information technology services, UITS provides e-mail access to all students and computer access on Windows/NT, Apple, and Unix operating systems with many of the popular general applications software available for teaching and research. Several computer clusters are accessible on various locations on the campus as well as mainframe computers for high performance computing and network applications. UITS is also equipped with a number of supercomputing facilities.
- Computer Network Center (CNC) of the School of Engineering and Technology which maintains instructional laboratories for engineering-specific courses and software in addition to many of the popular applications software available for general applications. The instructional laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art Pentium computers with Windows/NT operating system.
- Engineering-specific software such as the finite element programs ANSYS, ALGOR; computational fluid dynamics software FLOTRAN, StarCD, FLuent; solid modeling software AutoCAD, ProEngineer, IDEAS, Unigraphics; and mathematical/numerical analysis software MATLAB and its various toolboxes.
- Unix and NT based facilities in the department's Research Laboratories , including a Unix based SUN ULTRA mainframe mesolv for computationally intensive applications.
