Giving Basics
Designating Your Gift Any area or program within the School and/or university that you choose to support will make a difference. You may designate your gift for any purpose that contributes to the Purdue School of Engineering Technology threefold mission of teaching, research, and service. Among the most useful gifts, however, are those designated for "wherever the need is greatest." These unrestricted gifts offer much-needed flexibility to an otherwise rigid state-appropriated budget. They allow the School to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and meet challenges and opportunities that often arise after state budgets are set. You can be assured that by making an unrestricted gift, it will be put to the best possible use. Endowed Funds: The Gifts That Keep On Giving An endowment is an investment in the future of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology and its academic programs. The following levels are the minimum levels required to establish the following endowed funds: When you use your charitable gift to establish an endowment, the gift is invested with two goals in mind: to make the principal grow faster than the rate of inflation, and to provide spendable income for whatever specific purpose you have designated. The principal is never invaded, and any earnings over a certain amount--usually five percent--are channeled back into the fund to keep it healthy and growing at a pace which exceeds inflations. Well-managed endowments can generate income indefinitely. That fact makes them uniquely valuable to the School, and therefore especially attractive to donors who wish to leave a legacy at the Purdure School of Engineering and Technology. Gift Agreements Whenever an endowed gift fund is established, a gift administration agreement is created to set forth the specific criteria of your intent in which the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology will utilize your gift. It ensures that the gift will be used as you intend and may set out provisions for alternative uses, should it become impossible or impractical to carry out your original intention (as when, for instance, advances in knowledge render a given field of study obsolete). For these reasons, the School and its foundation require that all endowed funds have a written gift agreement on file. The School's development staff will work with you during the establishment of your endowed scholarships, program, fund, professorship, or chair to draw up the agreement.
