IUPUI Music Academy’s 12th Annual Performathon Set for May 16 at Indianapolis Artsgarden

May 8, 2015

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) announced today that the Music Academy, a community music school within the Department of Music and Arts Technology, will host its 12th annual fundraiser, Performathon, on May 16. Students and faculty from the academy will perform free of charge from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Artsgarden in downtown Indianapolis.

Performathon provides the public with an opportunity to experience a ‘musical marathon’ showcasing the talent of local students of all ages as well as a wide variety of solo and ensemble music performed by the academy’s faculty members. All monies raised at the event will fund student scholarships. Donations will be accepted on-site or those interested may make contributions to the academy directly.

“I am thrilled with the continuing success of the Performathon, in terms of both amazing student performances and the amount we raise for scholarships,” said E.J. Choe, director of the academy.  “It’s important to recognize the hard work of our performers, the dedication of our teachers and the endless support of parents, families and donors."

A non-profit educational organization, the academy provides professional music instruction to Indianapolis area residents of all ages and levels of ability.  Great care and personal attention are given to each student, and music classes are provided in both private and group formats. Contributions directly support students at the academy:

  • $300 provide weekly 30-minute lessons for one student for one semester
  • $500 provide weekly 45-minute lessons for one student for one semester
  • $5,000 provide weekly 60-minute lessons for one students for an entire year (fall, spring and summer session)

“We recognize that these are difficult financial times for many and that is why contributions are even more important for our needs-based scholarship fund,” said Andrea Brandes Newsom, chair of the academy’s Board of Advisors.  “The board would like to thank in advance those who provide financial aid at any level.”
