INDIANAPOLIS — The School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis announced today that Antonio Angel Barragan has been awarded a scholarship for academic excellence in the field of asphalt technology from the Association of Modified Asphalt Producers (AMAP).

“We are thrilled for Antonio, who is incredibly deserving of this award,” said David J. Russomanno, dean of the School of Engineering and Technology. “Honors such as this exemplify the caliber of both our students and our academic programs.”

Scholarship winners were announced at the 2016 AMAP annual conference. AMAP established the scholarship in 2010 in memory of David R. Jones IV, an Asphalt Hall of Fame recipient and industry leader.

Barragan is pursuing a degree in construction engineering management technology at IUPUI. Additionally, he is a project controls engineer intern at Marathon Petroleum Corp. In this role, he assists in the scheduling and cost control supervision of the company's multimillion-dollar construction projects at its Detroit refinery. The facility includes the largest domestic asphalt production capacity in the United States.

Barragan was born in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and migrated with his family to the United States when he was five-years-old. He completed high school and attended community college in Casper, WY, before enrolling at IUPUI.

“This is a tremendous honor for Antonio as the national scholarship receives a large number of extremely qualified applicants from which there are three recipients,” explained Charles McIntyre, visiting professor of Construction Engineering Management Technology. “We recently developed a relationship with AMAP and the organization not only has provided valuable resource materials but also industry networking opportunities for our students.”
