Kyle Compton, a senior in the motorsports engineering program at IUPUI’s School of Engineering and Technology, received the surprise of a lifetime during the 2016 Red Bull Global Rallycross series’ annual Awards Celebration. Held at the end of the race season each year, the event took place at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles on Oct. 11. In the Off Track category, Kyle, a crew member for Bryan Herta Rallysport, received a Supercar Crew Award.

"I was stunned for a bit when they said my name,” he explained. “They said the award was intended for a young, hard-working employee on a race team. I take pride in my work ethic, so it was a huge honor.”

Since joining the motorsports engineering program, Kyle has gained a great deal of real-world experience interning for the IndyCar Series his first year in the program and then working for the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team his junior year. This season, he served as an engineering intern for Bryan Herta Rallysport. With the team’s lead engineer based in Scotland, Kyle received great deal more experience than in a typical internship.

“With the lead engineer flying in, more opportunities – and challenges – came my way,” he said with a laugh. “In particular, communication challenges while in Europe!”

Kyle will graduate this December and anticipates working for Herta or Rahal full time. “I wouldn’t be where I am without the motorsports engineering program. I’m now a race engineer – that’s my dream. There’s no better place to go to college than IUPUI. I want to thank everyone at the School and IUPUI as well as Bryan Herta, all who made it possible for me,” he said.
