Grading

Lab Reports (7)                            100 points each

Pre Lab Assignments (7)               Must be completed before experiment is done

Quizzes (2)                                   100 points each

Participation                                 100 points

Total Possible Points                    1000

The final grade for the lab will be a percentage of the 1000 possible points.  This percentage will then be averaged with your lecture grade based on the criteria set forth in the lecture portion of the class.

Experiments

Experiment #1, Tensile Test

Experiment #2, Strain in a Deflected Beam

Experiment #3, Stress Concentrations

Experiment #4, Hardness Test

Experiment #5, Torsion of Prismatic Bars

Experiment #6, Bending of Beams #1, Equation Verification

Experiment #8, Buckling of Columns

Pre-Labs

The pre-lab assignments must be completed by each member of the group prior to performing the respective experiment.  The questions that make up the pre lab assignments are generally basic theory questions that will be directly from the textbook or the additional theory provided in the lab write up.

Team Member Roles

There are 3 distinct roles in each team.  The first is the investigator.  This person is in charge of developing the theory, procedure, and equipment list sections.  The second is the analyst.  This person is in charge of the results, conclusion, sample calculations, and data tables sections.  This leaves the abstract, introduction, and references to the team leader who is also responsible for assembling the final report and revising if necessary.

Lab Reports

All lab reports must strictly follow the guidelines set forth in the lab manual.  Reports are due 2 weeks following completion of an experiment at the beginning of lab.

Late Work

Lab reports submitted after the start of lab will automatically receive a 10 point deduction.  For each day there after there will be a 5 point deduction.

All reports must be submitted in order to pass the laboratory section of the course.

Quizzes

Following the first 4 and the last 3 lab experiments, there will be quizzes that cover material from each of the lab experiments.  Assuming you thoroughly understood the experiment while you were performing it and while writing the report, the quizzes should only require a brief review of the material.  Most of the equations that you will need will be provided to you.
