ME 200 Thermodynamics I (3 cr.)

Syllabus

Outcomes: After completion of this course, the students should be able to:

1. Explain the concepts of equilibrium, temperature, property, state, and thermodynamic system. [a4]

2. Apply the first law of thermodynamics systems. [a4]

3. Apply the first law of thermodynamics to open systems using a control volume analysis. [a4]

4. Find the thermodynamics properties of a pure compressible substance (e.g. steam, air) in two phases (liquid and vapor) or a single phase. [a4]

5. Apply the Clausius and Kelvin-Plank statements of the second law of thermodynamics or use the concept of entrophy to compare the actual behavior of systems with idealized, reversible behavior. [a4]

6. Compare the calculated, measured, or claimed performance of power cycles and refrigeration cycles with the efficiency or COP limits imposed by the second law. [a4]

7. Analyze all processes in a vapor power system and calculate its performance. [e]

8. Analyze all processes in gas power systems and calculate their performance. [e]

9. Analyze all processes in refrigeration and heat pump systems and calculate their performance. [e]
