Want to be a Mechanical Engineer?

Mechanical Engineering is one of the most diverse of the engineering fields. A Mechanical Engineering education at IUPUI will not only introduce you to a large number of disciplines such as mechanics, dynamics, controls, thermodynamics, heat transfer, design, materials, but will also allow you to choose a number of electives so that you can learn more about more specialized topics such as composites, advanced computer aided design, renewable energy, advanced stress analysis and many others.

A mechanical engineer can have many different types of jobs. In addition to designing new components, products, control systems or devices, a mechanical engineer is typically concerned with the generation, conversion, transmission, and utilization of mechanical and thermal power. Of course these topics are not exhaustive and mechanical engineers can be involved with the analysis and development of materials, new manufacturing methods, robotics, electromechanical devices as well as many other fields. If it moves or uses energy, a mechanical engineer was probably involved.

Mechanical engineers are employed in industry, government, research laboratories, and consulting groups. Due to their versatility, and general knowledge of many disciplines it is not uncommon for Mechanical engineers to become project leaders, move into management, technical sales or administrative positions.
