Education and Background
Oliver Bouthier studied at Georgia Tech where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1987 and Master's degree in 1988 in Engineering Science and Mechanics. The focus of his studies during that time was in stress analysis, dynamics, and vibration. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1992 from the Purdue School of Mechanical Engineering where he furthered the advancement of Statistical Energy Analysis at the Herrick Laboratories. During this time at Purdue, Oliver also developed an interest in chaos and nonlinear systems.
In 1992, Oliver joined Cummins Inc. as an engineer in the vibration laboratory in Columbus, Indiana. From 1992 to 2000, he helped further the use of several experimental mechanics techniques such as experimental modal analysis, vibration data acquisition, and fatigue testing. During that time, he traveled to many customer sites where he helped diagnose vibration-related problems. From 2000 to 2003, he was the leader of a small group that concentrated on the analysis of journal bearing lubrication, crank dynamics, and overhead component dynamics. From 2003 to the present time, Oliver has been the manager of the noise and vibration laboratory where he helps set the strategy in diesel engine noise technology for Cummins Inc.
