CHAIR'S WELCOME
Dr. Hasan U. AkayChancellor's Professor and Chair Department of Mechanical Engineering, IUPUI hakay@iupui.edu Personal Web Site Department Vision Department Mission Welcome to the website of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IUPUI, an electronic resource for news and information about our department’s activities. In the following pages, you will become acquainted with our undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as the research and teaching interests of our faculty and the accomplishments of our undergraduate and graduate students. While our mission is to support the technical development of Indianapolis and Central Indiana in an urban setting, we also are proud of our association with the nationally renowned programs of Purdue University’s West Lafayette Campus. With high quality teaching, research, co-op, and internship opportunities, our department offers Purdue degrees at the Bachelor and Master level. Furthermore, Ph.D. thesis research can be conducted on our campus in collaboration with the faculty at West Lafayette. Mechanical Engineering is one of the most versatile engineering disciplines. It encompasses almost all aspects of modern technology from man-made devices to biological systems. Local industry looks to our students and graduates when employing mechanical engineers. A large percentage of our graduates work in the design and development of automotive, aircraft, and rocket engines as well as heating and air-conditioning systems, electronic equipment, hydraulic- and turbo-machinery, power conversion systems, materials processes, and biotechnology products.
To serve the Central Indiana community better and allow part-time students to take classes, many of our courses are offered during late afternoons or evenings. Small class sizes allow our faculty to get involved with students’ special needs. The demand for mechanical engineering graduates has increased dramatically during the recent years. Due to rapid technological developments, it is expected that there will be a shortage of qualified mechanical engineers in the near future. Our undergraduate and graduate courses are designed to prepare students to meet the demands of rapid technological developments and become leaders in the 21st century. If you are a prospective student, we will be happy to help you become more familiar with mechanical engineering and its benefits and make you an integral part of the exciting changes happening in today’s high-technology field. Please feel free to contact our department to aid you in any way.
Finally, we invite all of you to browse through these pages and look forward to your visit to our campus and with our faculty in the near future. For questions regarding the freshman program please contact Ms. Janet Meyer at jmmeyer@iupui.edu and for the graduate program contact Ms. Valerie Lim at wvlim@iupui.edu.
