Organizational Leadership and Supervision (OLS) Current Course Offerings:

 

OLS 100 Introduction to Organizational Leadership and Supervision (1 cr.) This class offers a general introduction to the practices and processes relevant to front line supervisors, managers, and leaders at all levels of organizations. Students analyze theories and assumptions on a variety of leadership and personal and organizational development topics. Students will meet the OLS faculty, and learn the requirements and attributes of the OLS degree program.

 

OLS 252 Human Behavior in Organizations (3 cr .) Study of the bases of human relations and organization of individual and group behavior. Special emphasis on typical supervisory relationships.

 

OLS 263 Ethical Decisions in Leadership (3 cr.) This class is for students interested in discussing and contemplating the difficult legal and ethical situations facing managers in all sizes and types of organizations. Students in this class will read and discuss a variety of writings on ethics in the workplace and also analyze both written and videotaped legal/ethical scenarios.

 

OLS 274 Supervisory Management (3 cr.) Introduction to and overview of the fundamental concepts of supervision. Emphasis on the supervisor's major functions and essential areas of knowledge, relations with others, and personal development.

 

 

OLS 327 Leadership for a Global Work Force (3 cr.) Variety of leadership issues including expatriate assignments issues including expatriate assignments, international business strategies and their culture and managerial implications, and a review of business and management practices around the world.

 

OLS 331 Occupational Safety and Health (3 cr.) Aspects of occupational safety and health that are essential to the first line supervisor. Emphasis on economic, legal, and social factors related to providing a safe and healthful working environment.

 

OLS 368 Personnel Law (3 cr.) Influence of the law on personnel-human resource management. Covers such topics as discrimination based on sex, age, national origin, or handicap; recruitment and selection; affirmative action; rights of union and nonunion employees; Fair Labor Standards Act; Equal Pay Act and comparable worth; employee benefits plans; unemployment compensation; and right to discharge.

 

OLS 375 Training Methods (3 cr.) Aspects of job training that are essential to the first line supervisor. Emphasis on understanding the way people learn jobs and job skills. (View Class Syllabus Adobe Acrobat Format)

 

OLS 378 Labor Relations (3 cr.) Problems of workers, with possible solutions as suggested by organized labor and management. Regulations concerning management, labor, the collective bargaining agreement, and grievance and arbitration procedures.

 

OLS 383 Human Resource Management (3 cr.) An overview of human resource functions in organizations today. Descriptions of each major function; case studies to explore applications of human resource principles.

 

OLS 385 Leadership for Quality and Productivity (3 cr.) (Prerequisite: Junior Standing; ENG-W131) Management perspectives and applications necessary for success in today's quality-driven organizations and industries including various topics relating to management systems: TQM, ISO, Six-sigma.

 

OLS 390 Leadership Theories and Processes (3 cr.) (Prerequisite: OLS 252, OLS 263, OLS 274; ENG W131Prerequisite or Co-requisite: OLS 327, 378; COM R110) Knowledge and applied leadership skills essential for establishing and continuously improving organizational effectiveness by forestalling and solving workplace problems.

 

OLS 399 Special Topics (1-6 cr.) Hours and subject matter to be arranged by staff. Primarily for upper-division majors with specific interests and aptitudes. May be repeated for up to 6 credit hours.

 

OLS 410 Survival Skills in Organizational Careers (3 cr.) Focuses on the organization as a social system within which careers develop through the reciprocal influences of organization and

people. Examines how occupations are chosen, the stages of an unfolding career, and factors that influence successful careers. Emphasizes coping with change and developing personal strategies.

 

OLS 454 Gender and Diversity in Management (3 cr.) Supervisors need to learn to recognize cultural diversity, learn to value and respect fundamental differences, and find common ground on which to build relationships of trust and mutual respect with diverse employees. This course will introduce awareness-based training to increase self-awareness on diversity related issues such as stereotyping and cross-cultural differences and how to respond to differences in the workplace.

 

OLS 476 Compensation Planning and Management (3 cr.) Focuses on the management of employee compensation. Examines the current state of compensation management and implications of

recent theoretical and research developments related to compensation decisions. Gives each student the opportunity to develop a compensation package.

 

OLS 479 Staffing Organizations (3 cr .) A detailed look at the recruiting function of organizations to give the student a sense of the challenges of recruiting qualified employees in the twenty-first century. Actual examples, group exercises, and considerable class discussion.

 

OLS 490 Senior Research Project (3 cr.) Individual members of this seminar-type class study problems or areas of their own choosing in the field of supervision, guided by the instructor. Class presentations by students on their progress; instructor-led discussions of research methods.
