Plagiarism: What It Is and How to Recognize and Avoid It

This is a good place to review the difference between good paraphrasing and plagiarism. When you are doing reports, you need to be very clear on the difference, because plagiarism is dealt with very severely.

Purdue has one of the most extensive web sites around. It is worth your time to get familiar with this site as it has links to a wide variety of resources. It has extensive handouts on all phases of the writing process. There are a lot of handouts related to ESL and a listing of other on-line writing labs. Some sample handouts are: Writing Report Abstracts, Memo Writing, Proofreading, Editing, and Revising. In short, if it relates to writing, you can find it here or find a link to the information.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Writing Center

Rensselaer's writing center is noted for having lots of examples and is a good site for improving your writing. It has sections on "Write in the Active Voice" and "Express Parallel Ideas in Parallel Form". Other sections discuss fifty of the most common problems with punctuation and mechanics. While not specifically aimed at technical writers, this site does give good advice about improving your writing that will help any writer.

MIT Online Writing Center

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has some excellent writing tutorials, although some of them are accessible only to their students.
