CAREER CENTER PRESENTS: INTERVIEWING TECHNIQUES WORKSHOP 3/26

Are you preparing for job interviews? Attend the Career Center's Interviewing Techniques workshop. Various forms of interviews (patterned, free association, stress, group) will be discussed, how to prepare for the interview, dressing for success and recruiter's objectives. HONORS SCHOLARSHIP

IUPUI Honors Scholarship ($1250 full-time/$625 part-time) Awarded for the 2001-2002 Academic Year (two semesters)

Talented and motivated students who have demonstrated their academic abilities either by distinguishing themselves in honors classes, or by completing at least 12 credit hours with at least a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

Recipients of this scholarship are required to take one Honors course or H-Option during each semester in which they receive the scholarship. RECREATIONAL TENNIS CLINIC

Get into the Swing this Spring - Recreational Tennis Clinic: The Department of Intramural & Recreational Sports proudly presents the spring Recreational Tennis Clinic.

The clinic will be held at the Indianapolis Tennis Center Outdoor Courts on Tuesdays, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., starting March 27 thru April 24. The registration fee is $35. Registration deadline is Friday, March 23, 2001. All IUPUI students, faculty, & staff who have paid the spring recreation fee are eligible. All participants will receive 30 mins. of instruction prior to match play.

JOIN IUPUI'S RACE FOR THE CURE TEAM: TEAM JAGUARS

IUPUI is forming a team for the upcoming Komen Indianapolis Race for the Cure. The 5k run/walk and 1 mile family walk is scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 21, on campus. Please join Team Jaguars as we lace up our shoes and help find a cure for breast cancer. Team registration is $18, which is used to fund local breast cancer research and programs.

CLOTHING DRIVE FOR JULIAN CENTER TO CELEBRATE WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Clean out your closets to help provide items for the Julian Center, a local women's shelter. The clothing drive will take place Monday, March 19-Friday, March 23, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., in University College, room 002. During the drive, Phi Mu will be accepting donations of bed linens, towels, women's clothing, toiletry items, children's clothing and plastic hangers to donate to the Julian Center. All donations must be clean and in good condition. Please drop off donations in a box or a bag with handles. This project is sponsored by Phi Mu Women's Fraternity.

BOOKMARKS VOTE

Please note that the BookMarks Program will be holding a public vote for its selections for 2001-2002 from Monday, March 26 until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 6. The vote is open to the public and all students, faculty, and staff are invited to cast their ballots for their favorite books on the list. To vote, simply go on-line to http://bookmarks.uc.iupui.edu and select the "vote for this year's books" page or go by the library and pick up a ballot.

BLOOD PRESSURE STUDIES

Participants needed for a Blood Pressure Study:
1) Men and women (18 and older) with high blood pressure for a 7 to 9 week drug study.
2) Men and women (18 to 75 years old) with high blood pressure and high cholesterol for a 32 to 34 week drug study.

INDIANA LATINO COLLEGIATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

The Latino communities of IUPUI and IU Bloomington are co-sponsoring a conference designed to foster and encourage Latino student leaders, and to assist in the development of the state's Latino college student population into well-rounded altruistic leaders.

More than 100 Latino collegiate leaders are expected to attend the first annual Indiana Latino Collegiate Leadership Conference Saturday, March 31 at Indiana University Bloomington. The Theme is "Liberation Through Education."

Special guest speakers for the event include Juan Andrade, president of US Hispanic Leadership Institute; and Dr. Gerardo Gonzalez, dean of the IU School of Education.

Other speakers scheduled include: actor Jesse Borego, "Cruzito" in the Hollywood film "Bound By Honor;" Michelle Castillo-Flores, INROADS; Roberto N. Ceballos, La Casa of NWI, Inc.; Ann Marie Pagan, operations manager for WBBM-TV in Chicago; Teresa Puente, staff writer, Chicago Tribune; Maria Quiroz-Southwood, Wishard Health Services; and Natalia Rayzor, Indiana University Credit Union.

Deadline for registration is March 23, 2001.

RUFUS REIBERG READING SERIES ANNOUNCED

The IUPUI School of Liberal Arts Department of English Creative Writing Program and the IUPUI University Library are collaborating to present the Rufus Reiberg Reading Series of visiting writers for Spring 2001. Featured national authors will include Ronald Wallace (Thursday, Apr. 5, 4 p.m.).

The Rufus Reiberg Reading Series was established in 1997 with an endowment in honor of Dr. Reiberg, the late chair of the Liberal Arts Department of English. The intention for the series is to present nationally recognized writers on the IUPUI campus, for the benefit of students and the community. Through partnership with the IUPUI University Library, funding for the series has been expanded, with support from the Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund, Associated Writing Programs, and the Copper Canyon Press, with funding from the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund through the American Library Association's LIVE! At The Library 2000 program.

The works of poet Richard Jones were most recently published in a collection entitled, The Blessing: New and Selected Poems. An earlier collection of poetry was entitled, 48 Questions. Jones serves as editor of Poetry East, and teaches at DePaul University, Chicago.

Award winning poet Reginald Shepherd was the recipient of the 1993 Associated Writing Programs' Award for Poetry, for his first book, Some Are Drowning. He has also received a "Discovery"/ The Nation award, a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, and an Illinois Arts Council poetry fellowship. Recently, Sheperd's book, Wrong, was a selection of the Poetry Club of the Academy of American Poets, and he teaches at Cornell University.

Patricia Goedicke's readings will be part of the IUPUI Women's Studies, International Women's Day celebration. She has had twelve volumes of poetry published, including As Earth Begins to End and The Tongues We Speak: New and Selected Poems, which was named one of best books of the year by The New York Times. Goedicke teaches creative writing at the University of Montana.

Author Ronald Wallace has produced books of poetry, fiction and criticism, with the most recent being a collection of stories, Quick Bright Things, and a volume of poems, The Uses of Adversity. He has been the recipient of four, Council for Wisconsin Writers Book Awards and a Lynde and Harry Bradley Major Lifetime Achievement Award. Wallace is also the Director of Creative Writing for the University of Wisconsin.

CRIME ALERT: ROBBERIES

Two robberies occurred within minutes of each other on March 4, around 11:25 p.m. The first occurred in IUPUI Lot 69 800 W. North Street. The second occurred in IUPUI Lot 58 1075 W. Vermont Street. Both victims were approached by a male displaying a semi-automatic handgun who demanded their wallets. Neither victim was injured.

The suspect was described by both victims as a black male, 6' 2" 185-200 lbs, dark complexion, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, gray sweat pants and possibly a dark blue stocking cap under the hood. He was armed with a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, and last seen running south through IUPUI Lot 58.

ADULT OUTSTANDING SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 (DEADLINE: MAY 1, 2001)

The 2001 Adult Oustanding Scholarship (AOS) information sheets and application forms are now available at the Honors Office (UC 3140) and Scholarshp Office (CA 003). All applicants, without exception, must be at least 30 years old; have had an interruption in their schooling of at least five years; have not earned a baccalaureate degree; have a minimum GPA of 3.5 since returning to school; and have completed at least 12 credit hours since returning to school. All 12 credit hours must have been completed by the end of the Fall, 2000 semester. A 400-500 word essay is required in addition to the application form.
