The assembler generates machine language op codes from the assembly code (mnemonics).
A cross-assembler generates code for a processor other than the one on which the assembler is running
Most coding is done on PC or Unix-based development platforms using cross-assemblers.
The cross-assembler that we use in the lab for this course is hosted on a PC and is part of the Cosmic development package. The target processor is a Motorola 68HC12 microcontroller.
