There are many asynchronous data transfer protocols. Only two examples SCI and J1850 are introduced here. SCI is a full duplex data transfer protocol. It uses part of the definitions specified in the RS-232 communication protocol. SCI can transfer as fast as 156 Kbits per second.
J1850 is an SAE standard designed for automotive applications. General Motors adopted part of this standard and calls it Class 2 communication. J1850 adopts half-duplex data transfer format and can transmit at 10 Kbits/sec or 40 Kbits/sec.
